As one of the densest areas with the highest house prices in the world, Hong Kong has a lot of public housing provided by the government for low-income families to live in. These housings are usually very high and dark, even the light wells are lack of natural light, which is uncomfortable and bad for health. The distance between the rooms is so close and narrow. Residents can see through the opposite house. And because of this situation, they have to close a curtain, which will further reduce the daylight entering the houses. Our design intended to solve this problem. We designed an installation made up of a series of some half-cylinder convex lenses that arrayed parallelly. This material is being used widely by magicians, who make it into a piece of Slanted Lenticular Lens. Unlike normal convexes, the half-cylinder ones only magnify and shrink objects in one direction, so that they can distort sight magically, some time can make an object disappear. We arrange parallel convexes with different focal lengths in different directions. The more complex the pattern is, the more magical effect it turns out to be. We designed a leaf-pattern Slanted Lenticular Lens made of plastic. The following pictures show that it can create beautiful lights and shadows on the wall. Also, it has the effects of 'deconstructing', as the below right picture shows. Although there is only one lamp behind, the screen 'deconstruct' it and turn it into several light sources. Light has been refracted, reflected, and dispersed hundreds of times. The views are also deconstructed, which remained us of the art pieces by David Hockney. But the effects are even more complicated. A 3D world is transformed into a 2D picture. People cannot recognize what's going on behind the screen, which is beneficial for protecting privacy. Like a piece of deconstruction art, the screen provides a unique way of understanding the light and views. Design is a way for solving real social problems. We hope to provide a poetic solution and bring life some beautiful, surprising, and enjoyable moments.
